Julia Holter – World

A video for the first single off Julia Holter’s upcoming LP ‘Loud City Song’ has just been released and is available to stream below. It’s a mysterious and meandering piece, hinting at transience, alienation and longing in much the same way as Holter’s yearning lyrics and haunting harmonies. As a choice for a first single it’s pretty bold, containing none of the hooks or beats that helped secure the cross-over success of ‘Ekstasis’ last year, but as an example of the quality, complexity, subtlety and intricacy with which Holter has built her reputation – and that we should now expect from her next offering – it certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Image is a still from a film by Stan Brakhage, a beautiful double-disc set of whose is available on the wonderful Criterion.
