Whether you know it as the Rump of Britain, Albion’s Hind Quarters, Home of the Broads or simply the Wales of the East, Norfolk is a fascinating region. Birthplace of Lord Nelson and Bernard Matthews and home to Longstanton Spice Museum, it has a rich and varied history. Hailing from the region, and sure to add their names to its cultural canon, are Norwich-based trio Transept, who have just released the first single from their brilliantly titled ‘Buff as Fuck’ LP, which is out on 25th March.
It’s called Muscle Beach, stars Luke Abbott on production and boasts the kind of aggressively kaleidoscopic video you’d expect to accompany a song that leaves you feeling like you’ve been willingly pummeled into submission. That only tells half the story though; what starts off as an exercise in abrasion slowly blooms into a beautifully hypnotic chord progression, underpinned by over-sized bass drum thuds and caustic 808 snare snaps. Anything that treads the line between plaintive and aggressive this well is definitely worth a listen.
