After being shocked into a state of catatonic mesmerism by the astounding beauty of Julianna Barwick’s 2009 self-released EP Florine (honestly, this isn’t hyperbole, the first time I heard it I really did forget everything else that was happening, had happened or could possibly ever happen to me for those first three stunning songs), news of a new album was always going to be an exciting prospect. And lo, here it is. The same old haunting, dreamy, angelic sounds are still there, albeit with some additional rhythmic elements and a more complex timbre. It’s meant some of the charm of her earlier, more personal work has been lost, but the overall effect is far more nuanced and accomplished. Kind of like Joanna Newsom’s Have One On Me, if you get what I mean.
