I can’t remember how I came across Patrick Kelleher. It was something I downloaded offhandedly, possibly after a recommendation from someone I can’t remember, maybe from a track drifting around Myspace, maybe even just because the cover art was nice. Either way, it was something I instantly forgot about. The name never jumped out whilst scrolling through my library and without a serendipitous shuffle moment (aren’t they the best?) I think it could have been lost for ever. But thankfully it wasn’t.
Patrick’s a nice young chap from Ireland who appears quite quiet and introverted and makes funny little songs using a crappy little keyboard and acoustic guitar loops and shrouds everything in layers of echo and reverb and a distant, haunted fuzz of distortion that gives it a strange, childish, otherworldly feel that I really like. Oh, and as well as that, he’s got a wonderful gift for creating extremely simplistic harmonic structures that revolve around occasional moments of dramatic, distressing and heartbreaking beauty.
Check out Until I Get Paid, Blue Eyes and Wonder on his Myspace too. They’re really cool.
