Flying Lotus – Lovers Melt II

6 Jul

For various unbeknownst and abysmal Acts of God we’ve recently been engulfed by a tidal wave of ‘actual work’. Quite what we’ve done to deserve this we’re not entirely sure, but either way the penitence we’re paying is painful. Whilst this may lead to our output being somewhat diminished, we’d like to think we can find the time to sniff out the odd choice cut and serve it up for you all hot and well-seasoned. Nothing should serve this purpose better, or keep you entertained for longer, than this warming soup of buttered soul and chopped beats from Brainfeeder homme du moment, Flying Lotus. Go on, tuck in.

New Fly Lo

Despite claiming he’s not a fan of the site, Flying Lotus has just put up a whole load of new tracks onto Soundcloud. Where his feelings of antipathy towards such a brilliant platform for finding new music come from he doesn’t say, but far be it from me to argue with Mr. Ellison, especially when he’s decided to deign us with some new material. Below you can find a few of the cuts he’s put up, including a spine-tingly collab with Bjork and a suitably springy remix of Mr. Oizo’s, Rubber.

Brainfeeder Radio One Takeover

No explanation necessary for this one, really – two hours of Brainfeeder goodness, curated by Flying Lotus and featuring sets from Austin Peralta, Tokimonsta, Teebs and Matthew David. Get over to our Soundcloud to scope the track list and download…

Add Void’s Ten From 2010 #4

Keeping up with the down-tempo side of things, mix number 4 is a little sortie into the world of slow and syncopated beats. That’s about as close you’re going to get to defining a genre with thousands of sub-categories to choose from – some favourite classifications I’ve found include fun-dip, soul-electronica and the curiously apt, drown-step – but however you want to label or pigeon-hole them, these tracks have gone towards making the year in ‘beats’ a pretty amazing one…

Back to the Future

I’ve been looking for a peg to hang this piece on for a while. Thank heavens for Rochester’s post and his abject veneration of Flying Lotus’ latest slab of 8-bit retro-futurism (see below). Sure the video’s great, but not all producers out there can be John Coltrane’s great nephew and have two massively popular and ground-breaking albums behind them. Much less can they afford expensive animation with throwaway LOLs and dream-like aesthetics for seedy music reviewers to pleasure themselves to.

What I’m trying to say is that some people don’t get the recognition they deserve, and while I’m not doubting Pattern + Grid World’s excellence , I would like to offer up an E.P. which I believe to be fresher, darker,  more inventive, and above all, superior to its  competitor.

Time Wharp are from Atlanta and that’s about all I know. They’ve only released these five songs and, as far as I can tell, aren’t touring, have few followers and have had barely any write-ups. For all this, they’ve made a nuanced, genre-oscillating record that generously rewards repeat listens and certainly deserves to be uttered in the same sycophantic breath as Mr. Lotus’. The first video’s not bad either.

You can download the E.P., Helvetica, for free, and legally, here:

I love everything about this. Really, absolutely, utterly everything. The track, the animation, the sentiment, the casual use of LOL. Literally, everything. If I were made out of pixels and had my life soundtracked I’d want it to be just like this. Can’t say anything more. No point. Just watch and enjoy.

Ok, so it’s no secret Flying Lotus’ new album, Cosmogramma, is well worth your time and effort. And it’s no feat of journalistic prowess for me to sit here and tell you how great it is neither. But damn it if, ‘Do the Astral Plane’ isn’t one of the best songs I’ve heard this summer. It manages to reference about 6 decade’s worth of music and then has the audacity to make you feel like you’re part of the sexiest roller disco you’ve ever been to at the same time; criteria I will now expect any track I listen to be fulfilled by.

For any Londonites, he’s going to be playing three shows on the 14th, 16th and 18th August, details of which can be found here.
