Teebs

10 Oct

There’s been a little flurry of activity on Teebs’ Soundcloud page in the last few days – three new tracks have surfaced from Brainfeeder’s languid-beatmaker-in-chief, prompting hopes that a follow-up to last year’s magnificent Ardor may be around the corner.  This is all speculative though, as no mention has been made of studio activity. So for now we’ll have to dine out on memories of his wonderful set at Corsica Studios a few weeks ago and sustain ourselves on the fresh morsels he’s thrown in our directions. Fingers crossed something more substantial is on the horizon.

Flying Lotus – Lovers Melt II

6 Jul

For various unbeknownst and abysmal Acts of God we’ve recently been engulfed by a tidal wave of ‘actual work’. Quite what we’ve done to deserve this we’re not entirely sure, but either way the penitence we’re paying is painful. Whilst this may lead to our output being somewhat diminished, we’d like to think we can find the time to sniff out the odd choice cut and serve it up for you all hot and well-seasoned. Nothing should serve this purpose better, or keep you entertained for longer, than this warming soup of buttered soul and chopped beats from Brainfeeder homme du moment, Flying Lotus. Go on, tuck in.

New Fly Lo

14 Jun

Despite claiming he’s not a fan of the site, Flying Lotus has just put up a whole load of new tracks onto Soundcloud. Where his feelings of antipathy towards such a brilliant platform for finding new music come from he doesn’t say, but far be it from me to argue with Mr. Ellison, especially when he’s decided to deign us with some new material. Below you can find a few of the cuts he’s put up, including a spine-tingly collab with Bjork and a suitably springy remix of Mr. Oizo’s, Rubber.

Brainfeeder Radio One Takeover

No explanation necessary for this one, really – two hours of Brainfeeder goodness, curated by Flying Lotus and featuring sets from Austin Peralta, Tokimonsta, Teebs and Matthew David. Get over to our Soundcloud to scope the track list and download…

TOKiMONSTA

15 Dec

Can’t think of a label whose output I’ve enjoyed listening to more than Brainfeeder’s this year. There’s no one else who has come close to spreading their signature sound across an entire roster without sounding old or tired or as if anything’s been done like it before. In light of this I feel like they deserve something. So this is me crowning Brainfeeder my label of the year. I’m sure Flying Lotus will be on the phone shortly…

Anyway. TOKiMONSTA is the latest artist from the LA staple to grab my attention and the split 10″ she’s released with Mike Gao this week has given me the opportunity to share a track. Her music has Brainfeeder written all over it but, as is the case with her label mates, she uses the trademark lopsided beats and retro-futurist aesthetic as blueprints to launch her own distinctive take on a genre that is fast becoming monopolized by one label.

Fingers crossed for more of the same from this lot in 2011- who knows where they’ll go next? With the recent award from Add Void under their belts, the sky really is the limit.

Soundcloud won’t let me share the rest of the songs from the EP, but click here to listen.

Beets

12 Nov

Here’s a video to massage your frontal lobes on a hungover morning. Yet more gold from Brainfeeder- this is Bern Rhythm by Teebs.

It’s apparently a ‘Codeine Remix’; a pretty apt description given the brilliantly narcotic qualities of both track and video. The opening shots bristle with energy, but as the video slows to its climax, it’s as though the song is physically affecting the fairground. The camera starts to pull lazily in and out of focus while the glittering lights from the waltzer mimic Teebs’ rattling production.  The final shot sees suspended chairs gently whirling, while the bodies occupying them appear motionless and limp, the track seemingly having worked its sedative effect.

A case of a good song made great by its accompanying video, even if the first few frames do recall a Channel 4 ident… Enjoy.

Ok, so it’s no secret Flying Lotus’ new album, Cosmogramma, is well worth your time and effort. And it’s no feat of journalistic prowess for me to sit here and tell you how great it is neither. But damn it if, ‘Do the Astral Plane’ isn’t one of the best songs I’ve heard this summer. It manages to reference about 6 decade’s worth of music and then has the audacity to make you feel like you’re part of the sexiest roller disco you’ve ever been to at the same time; criteria I will now expect any track I listen to be fulfilled by.

For any Londonites, he’s going to be playing three shows on the 14th, 16th and 18th August, details of which can be found here.
